Making Headlines

May 8th, 2008

It totally drives me crazy when journalists–in print and on the radio–say that person/thing/event “made headlines.” As if they, the media, have nothing to do with what “makes headlines” and becomes part of the discourse.

Maybe they’re just giving a lot of respect to the late-night copy editors who actually make the headlines.

Yeah. Night-time copy editors don’t get enough credit for writing headlines. That being said, we also don’t get yelled at for writing bad ones either.

Maybe it’s a quantity thing… when something makes headlines it generally makes BIGGER headlines. 80 points on the front, as opposed to that little 12 point thing on a brief on page A9. Just saying.
